Commonwealth > Tanzania - School Girl Essentials

'Education All Month, Every Month' for school girls in Arusha, Tanzania.

For a girl who is menstruating, the inability of her family to afford sanitary towels, coupled with cultural taboos around menstruation, means that she will miss on average four days of school every month. She will fall behind in class which often leads to her dropping out of school completely.

The Education All Month, Every Month Scheme will ensure that hundreds of girls in designated schools receive a supply of reusable or disposable sanitary towels, in addition to regular deliveries of underwear and soap. Furthermore, the programme will act as an entry point for engagement on wider issues related to menstrual hygiene and reproductive health, by providing an education forum in each participating school that will enable girls to learn about what to expect during puberty and raise awareness of risks surrounding HIV/AIDS.

By supporting the work of The African Children's Fund in partnership with Tanzanian NGO Mfuko Wa Watoto, we are able to help to ensure that a Tanzanian girl in a school in the traditionally Maasai region around Arusha, receives sanitary towels, underwear, and soap, and can participate in a regular discussion forum, giving hope, opportunity, and prospects for a brighter future.

It costs around £5 per month to provide these essential items to a schoolgirl in Tanzania.

Thank you to Yorkshire based PEAK Physiotherapy Limited, one of our Gold Donors for making a major contribution to this project.
